Parents Demand Neutrality from Munster Public Schools

It's time to prioritize education over political activism
We appreciate the difficult role the school plays in guiding and educating our community’s children, and we share residents’ concern about the notice permitting a student “walk-out” scheduled for February 12, 2026, at the Munster Fieldhouse. (see below)
While the school’s announcement cites safety as a priority, sanctioning what is being framed as a protest against federal law enforcement actions raises serious concerns for many parents. Most parents expressed frustration over the vagueness of the announcement as well as the timing. Issued just a day before the scheduled event, it gave families very little time to reach out to school officials to gain any understanding of what this "demonstration" might look like.

These are complex, emotionally charged national issues. It is our belief that such matters are best explored thoughtfully within classrooms and at home, where students can learn to analyze facts, consider multiple viewpoints, and engage in respectful dialogue.
High school students — many as young as 14 — are still developing their critical thinking skills. School-sanctioned activities that appear to take a position on politically contentious events risk sending the message that the institution itself endorses one perspective over another.
Public schools should aspire to teach students how to think rather than what to think.
Endorsing or organizing protests during the school day — especially with minimal notice and no clear educational framing — can blur that line and may undermine confidence in law enforcement among students who deserve a balanced understanding of civic institutions.
We strongly urge the school to reconsider future events of this nature and to prioritize impartial education. If opportunities for student expression are provided, we suggest framing them within curricular contexts that encourage inquiry, understanding, and informed discussion rather than taking sides on controversial national debates.
